Education System in Lithuania

Higher education studies in Lithuania are conducted according to degree and non-degree study programmes. There are two types of study programmes: university and college. Studies are organized in three cycles: the first cycle – Professional Bachelor’s or University Bachelor’s studies, the second cycle – Master’s studies, and the third cycle –Doctoral studies. Studies can be of different intensity: full-time and part-time.

Types of Higher Education Institutions:
University:

University is a higher education establishment where university-level studies prevail, and the majority of students comprise those following university programmes, where research is carried out, master and doctoral studies are organized and/or professional artistic creative activity of high level and fine art postgraduate study programmes are developed. The status of university may be granted to a higher education establishment which performs the above-mentioned functions even if its name does not include the word “university”.

College:

College is also a higher education institution in which non-university studies prevail; it directs its activities toward applied research and/or professional art. Colleges train specialists-practitioners to meet the needs of the country in the economy, education, culture and other sectors. College study programmes may include programmes (modules) that correspond to the university undergraduate studies and are coordinated with universities.

Types of Degrees:
Bachelor’s Degree:

This degree is awarded by both universities and colleges. The colleges offer professional bachelor’s degree, while the universities offer academic bachelor’s degree. This qualification lasts for 3 years at colleges and 4 years at universities. The total credit of this degree is 180. This is also called the first cycle of higher education.

Master’s Degree:

This degree is awarded by the Universities only. This degree requires 1-2 years of full-time study. To get admission into the Master’s degree programme, students must hold an academic bachelor’s degree. The total credit of this degree is 120. This degree prepares students for a particular profession that needs special practical skills. This is also called the second cycle of higher education.

Integrated Study Degree:

This degree is the combination of bachelor’s degree and master’s degree and is provided by the universities only. This degree prepares students for doctoral degree. This type of study is applicable for law and medical studies. The total credit of this degree is 300-360 and the duration is 5-6 years.

PhD / Doctoral Degree:

Universities or universities along with the research institutes offer Doctor’s degree in science or art. The duration varies, but generally requires 3 to 4 years of study. This is also called the third cycle of higher education.
