Cost of Living in Italy

The cost of living in Italy can fluctuate greatly depending on whether you live in the north or south. The northern part of the country tends to be much wealthier than its southern counterpart, and thus prices in the big cities like Milan and Rome are considerably higher than those in the rural areas. The overall living cost for a student in Italy range between (EUR)€950 to (EUR)€1,750 per month, this includes all (like accommodation, food, public transport, entertainment etc) and it will vary depending on individuals living style.

Types of Accommodation:
On-Campus:

On-campus accommodation comes in various forms, ranging from shared or private rooms to one bedroom flats, and can be catered or self-catered with private or shared bathrooms.

Private Housing:

It is always an option to look for independent housing, but this is often the most expensive choice. Rent of Private Housing in Italy can vary depending on location, type of house and how many rooms are there.

Bed and Breakfast:

Bed & Breakfast, which are homes that have been turned into mini-hotels. The typical B & B has about 4 – 8 rooms, with each room furnished and decorated differently.

Agriturismo:

The English meaning of agriturismo is “farm holiday”. This type of accommodation is tipacally like a bed and breakfast and some have provides a meal also.

Food Cost:

In Italy, buying food from the supermarkets is not expensive, as you could spend on average (EUR)€150  to (EUR)€280 per month. Lidl, Penny Market or Esselunga are known in Italy to have the lowest prices.

Transport:

The public transportation would be the easiest and most convenient method to travel in Italy. The train network in Italy is fast and well maintained, so visiting other cities in Italy is definitely an option. Fares start at around 20 EUR for a trip, but if you book earlier tickets, you could get discounts of up to 70%. In the big cities in Italy, you can rent a bike for a daily cost of (EUR)€2.50 or weekly (EUR)€6.
