Malaysia incorporates with an International Standard and high-quality education, which is closely monitored by the Malaysian Education Ministries through their quality control authorities and appropriate legislation such as The Education Act, 1996, The Private Higher Educational Institutions Act, 1996 and The Malaysian Qualifications Agency Act 2007.  There are over 700 private higher educational institutions and Universities in Malaysia. Many American and British Universities have set up their campuses in Malaysia for Malaysian as well as international students who wish to study in Malaysia at a lower cost.

Types of Higher Education Institutions:
Public Institutions:

Public institutions are government funded public universities, polytechnics and colleges. There are a total of 20 public institutions of higher education in Malaysia. From these 20 Institutions 5 are research oriented, 4 are comprehensive University and the remaining 11 are focused university. These institutions provide quality education to students.

Private Institutions:

These universities are supported by tuition fees and private donations. They typically have a smaller student body, close-knit campus community and are more expensive to attend. However, private universities often have better campus facilities on offer and more funding set aside for international students, especially need-based scholarships.

Offshore campus: 

International universities have established branch campuses in Malaysia. A branch campus is much like an offshore campus of an international university which offers same courses and awards as against the main campus. Local as well as global students can acquire foreign qualifications in Malaysia for an extremely affordable fee. 

Types of Degrees:

Diploma Degree:

A diploma programme consists of similar modules found in a degree programme, except that it requires fewer modules to earn a diploma. The duration of this degree is 2 to 3 year. After this degree an individual can apply for bachelor’s degree, where the duration of bachelor’s degree is reduced by 1 to 2 years.

Bachelor’s Degree:

Most students seek this qualification as a minimum achievement in their academic life. Some degree programmes are offered as Honors’ Degrees, which generally require a higher academic standard than just a pass. Some universities in Malaysia require students to study an additional year to achieve the Honors’ Degree. The duration of this degree is 3 to 5 years.

Master’s Degree:

A master’s degree is an academic degree granted to individuals who have undergone study demonstrating a mastery or high-order overview of a specific field of study. Most master’s programmes require some sort of research to be conducted, which would involve the writing of a thesis or dissertation. Full-time Masters Degrees usually takes 1 to 2 years to complete. Those studied on a part-time or distance learning basis will take longer to complete.

PhD / Doctorate Degree:

Doctorate degree programs, also known as Ph.D. programs, are the highest level of degree program available. To get admission into a Doctorate degree program, the individual must holds a master’s degree certificate. Completing a PhD program usually takes 3 to 5 years. It involves the completion of a dissertation and a major research project.
