Cost of Living in Malaysia

Malaysia is an exciting and affordable place to live compare to other countries. On a reasonable budget, you can cover your living and entertainment costs. The average international student should be prepared to spend about (USD)$400 to (USD)$600 per month for living expenses including accommodation, food, study materials etc, but also it depends on the students’ lifestyle which may determine his or her actual cost of living either on campus or off campus.

Types of accommodation:
On-Campus:

This accommodation in Malaysia varies more in nature than countries such as the USA, UK and Australia, where living ‘on-campus’ typically refers directly to living in a residence hall. In Malaysia, on-campus housing can be in the form of a residence hall or student hostel, each with a different set of facilities and rental rates. The residence halls are situated at the center of the campus, where some of them are located a few minutes’ walk from campus. Some of them provide meals, where the others are not. You can buy a meal plan, which cost (USD)$3 – (USD)$7 per day. There are different types of rooms, where some are single room and some are shared room. Hostels are the most commonly offered types of student housing in Malaysia. With varied communal facilities and living areas, living in a student hostel is somewhat comparable to living in a shared college house, or even a dormitory. Students may share rooms or have private rooms within a communal space.

Apartment:

Those who want to live independently, apartment is a good option for them. This types of accommodation provides furnished rooms with full equipped kitchen and bathroom. In this you have to cook your own food. These apartments are close to local amenities like bars, cafes, shops etc.

Student Residences:

If you want to stay independent and interact with other foreign students, student residence is a good option for you. This accommodation usually allows students of all age and nationalities in a house type environment. This offers shared kitchen facilities and gives you opportunity to practice your new language with other students even away from your classes.

Homestay:

Many Malaysia families welcomes international students to stay in their home, which may help you to improve your other language skill, learn about the daily life in Malaysia and meet new people. They provides a private furnished room and meals.

Food Cost:

Student meals expense is estimated to be around (USD)$130 to (USD)$210 a month the estimated cost is for three decent meals. For those who love to cook and share among the housemates the cooking expenses can be lower as the cost can be shared among your housemates.

Personal Expenses:

Your monthly personal expenses largely depend on your personal lifestyle. However, the cost can be estimated to be between (USD)$25 and (USD)$50. This includes your socializing needs, toiletries, haircut, clothes, movie, etc.
